Document Search

Document Search in Generate AI PC lets you explore your files with AI-powered queries or tap into general knowledge—even without uploading anything.


General AI Search (No Documents Required)

Before attaching any files, you can ask questions of the built‑in AI model:

  • Ask Anything
    Type your query into the "Ask me anything..." input box and press Enter. The model will respond using its general knowledge.

  • Agentic AI Cards
    Select a card to perform specialized tasks.

  • Code & Data Rendering
    Supports syntax highlighting for code (Python, JSON, etc.) right in the chat.

  • Interactive Tools:

    • Search Online – Click the icon to pull in the latest information from the web. The AI will cite its sources.
    • Voice Query – Click the icon to speak your question instead of typing.
    • Refresh Chat – Click the button to clear the session and start fresh.

Uploading & Selecting Documents

To leverage document search, you must first upload and select your files.

1. Attach a File

  1. Click the attach icon on the left side of the chat bar.
  2. Choose your file of any of the supported types.
  3. Once uploaded, the AI will reference its contents in your conversation.

2. Alternative Upload Methods

  1. Pick from Sidebar

    • In the left sidebar under App Usage, click Pick Documents.
    • If no files are uploaded yet, you’ll also see Pick Documents in the file panel.

  2. Manage in Settings

    1. Make sure Document Search is selected from the menu.
    2. Open Settings in the left sidebar.
    3. Upload new files or manage existing ones from the panel.

Document Processing

After you upload a file, it’s processed and stored into the vector database:

  1. Processing
    You’ll see a progress indicator while your file is analyzed. This can take a few seconds or minutes, depending on the file size.

  2. Completion
    Once finished, the status will update to Completed.

    Post-Generation Options

    After your response is generated, actionable icons appear at the bottom:

    • Copy — Quickly copy the generated text.
    • Feedback (Thumbs Up/Down) – Provides feedback on the AI-generated answer.
    • Metrics — View detailed generation stats:
      • Tokens per second
      • Time to first token
      • Total generation time
    • Play Again — Regenerate the response using the same prompt.
    • Export as PDF — Save the response as a downloadable PDF file.

    The feedback buttons do not send the content of your message—only whether or not the response was helpful. Your data is kept private.


Interacting with Your Documents

Your documents should appear in the Document Search panel.

  • If it’s not visible immediately, switch tabs and come back.
  • Make sure the Integration dropdown has local disk selected since it filters by storage location.

With documents available, you can:

  1. Select a Document
    Click on your uploaded file.

  2. Choose an Action

    • Summarize
      Generates a summary of the document.
    • Ask a Question
      Lets you chat with the document and retrieve specific details.

  3. Multi‑Document Chat
    Select several files and ask cross‑document questions in one conversation.

Chat History & Management

Keep track of your sessions:

  • New Chat
    Click New Chat to reset the conversation.

  • History Tab
    Browse past conversations under History next to My Files.
    Click any past chat to continue, or use the trash icon to remove it.
